About 3D Printed Assistive Devices
With approximately 35,000 undergraduate students, the University of Alberta is composed of a diverse student body, with many utilizing some form of an assistive device. For students relying on assistive devices for learning and day to day activities, obtaining these devices can be a challenge. Barriers to access for assistive devices include financial barriers, lack of customizability, or absence of an existing solution.
Assistive technologies are also not limited to a device that provides an immediate fix. Assistive divides can unlock opportunities to improve and facilitate simple day to day tasks. For example, a simple 3D printed light switch adapter can make it visually and physically easier to identify and flip the switch.
Through first hand experience witnessing barriers to access for assistive devices, ATEC is dedicated to leveraging engineering student expertise to design and create 3D printed assistive devices that meet the user where they are at. Our delivery is not only limited to students on campus, but to anyone in need of a custom assistive device.
By collaborating with engineering professionals, healthcare professionals, students from various degree backgrounds, and most importantly, the end-user, our aim is to be a service provider for low to no cost 3D printed assistive devices.
